This financial year marks a very special milestone for Budget Forktrucks, as in July we proudly began our 45th year in business.

Built on a Lifetime of Expertise

Our story began in 1981. At the time, Emlyn Evans was working for Montgomerie Reid, a respected forklift truck manufacturer based just outside Basingstoke. He had started his career at Lansing Bagnall, now known as Linde Material Handling. His friend, John Attwood, had worked as a Forklift Service Engineer at the Sainsbury’s Distribution Centre in Basingstoke before moving to Hamech Forklifts in Staines.

Between them, they had built a wealth of industry knowledge and experience. But they recognised that customers wanted more.

It wasn’t simply about supplying a quality forklift truck. Customers wanted a better overall experience. They wanted a supplier who took the time to understand their needs, who specified the right forklift truck for their operation and, above all, provided an unprecedented level of customer service and technical support.

The Beginning of Budget Forktrucks

Emlyn and John saw this opportunity to do things differently. Budget Forktrucks Ltd was founded in July 1982, built on a simple but powerful promise: to provide businesses with the right equipment, expert support and a level of service they could truly rely on. A partnership that would help keep operations moving, minimise downtime and ensure customers could always rely on their equipment.

What began with two people, extensive industry experience and a clear vision has grown into a business built on long-standing relationships, deep technical knowledge and a genuine commitment to our customers.

While John left the business in 1991 to pursue other business interests, Emlyn continued to build on the strong foundations established in those early years. The business thrived in response to increasing customer demand, new business referrals and a wider service area. This was strengthened through the acquisitions of KW Material Handling, Abingdon Forklifts, Abacus, Deca Handling, 1st Advanced Training Services and North Hants Forklifts over the years.

As the business expanded, so too did the need for larger premises. This led to the acquisition of freehold commercial premises just outside Tadley, bringing all departments together on one site, creating a stronger foundation for future growth.

A New Generation, the Same Commitment

Emlyn’s son, Andy Evans, joined the business as an apprentice and went on to gain experience in every department. Since 2001, Andy has been at the helm, allowing Emlyn to reduce his involvement and enjoy a well-earned retirement. Although, when you have worked hard to build something from the ground up, retirement is never quite complete. Emlyn remains a frequent visitor and still enjoys keeping a watchful eye on the business.

Nick Wells joined the business from North Hampshire Forklifts and took on the role of General Manager, working alongside Andy to share responsibility for the day-to-day delivery of our sales and service operations.

While the forklift industry has evolved enormously since 1982, our belief in the importance of service, reliability and putting customers first has never changed.
